Maldives President and CDF Munir Highlight Need for Enhanced Defence Ties
ISLAMABAD: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir and Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the critical need to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation during a meeting on Wednesday. This discussion took place in Islamabad as part of Muizzu’s three-day visit to Pakistan, marking the first visit by a Maldivian president in over a decade.
President Muizzu arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, established in 1966. During their meeting, CDF Munir and President Muizzu addressed various matters of mutual interest, including the current regional security environment and potential avenues for enhancing cooperation.
Both leaders underscored the importance of strengthening defence cooperation, institutional linkages, and professional exchanges, which are vital for ensuring stability in the region. This collaboration is particularly significant given the evolving security dynamics in South Asia, where both countries face common challenges.
Looking ahead, the two nations are expected to explore further initiatives to bolster their defence ties, including joint exercises and training programs. This visit may pave the way for deeper military collaboration, enhancing both countries’ capabilities to address regional security concerns.
