Insulin Shortage Hits Pakistan as German Manufacturer Halts Supplies

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan faces a significant shortage of insulin products used by Type 1 diabetes patients following a supply halt by a German manufacturer, as revealed by Parliamentary Secretary for Health Nelson Azeem on Friday.

During a session in the National Assembly, Azeem responded to concerns raised by MNA Syeda Amna Batool, stating that there had been no shortage until June, with sufficient stocks available until September. However, disruptions in supplies from Germany began in October, leading to the current crisis.

Azeem emphasized that the impact of this shortage extends beyond Pakistan, affecting patients across Asia, Australia, and Europe. He assured that the product would be available again once international supplies are restored, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

In light of the ongoing shortage, the health ministry is exploring alternative insulin products to mitigate the impact on patients. Further discussions and potential solutions are expected in upcoming parliamentary sessions.
