Leclerc Dominates Practice Sessions Ahead of US Grand Prix for Ferrari
AUSTIN: Charles Leclerc showcased his prowess on Friday by leading both practice sessions for Ferrari ahead of the United States Grand Prix, setting the stage for a thrilling weekend in Austin.
The 29-year-old Monegasque, who is expecting his first child, clocked a best lap of one minute and 35.291 seconds, narrowly edging out Mercedes’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli by just 0.042 seconds. Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull trailed in third, 0.189 seconds behind Leclerc. The Ferrari driver, who triumphed in Austin two years ago, displayed a relentless determination throughout the day, having also topped the opening practice.
Antonelli, at just 20 years old, stands on the brink of making history as Formula One’s youngest champion. If he secures victory this weekend and his closest rivals falter, he could become the first Italian champion for Ferrari since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Meanwhile, team-mate George Russell and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton must finish in the top eight and top four, respectively, to keep their championship hopes alive should Antonelli win.
Looking ahead, the stakes are high as the teams prepare for the qualifying rounds on Saturday, which will set the grid for the race on Sunday. With Leclerc’s strong performance, the competition is expected to intensify, particularly for Antonelli as he aims to clinch the title.
