Jamaat-i-Islami Plans Islamabad March If Petroleum Levy Not Abolished

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced on Monday that the party would stage a march to Islamabad in mid-November if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif fails to abolish the petroleum levy.

The JI has been advocating for the removal of levies, including Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel, for over two months. These levies have contributed to soaring fuel prices, which have escalated due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East since March.

During a press conference, Rehman emphasized that the JI has exercised patience and responsibility in light of international circumstances. He stated, “Now, the responsible thing to do is for us to be aggressive,” highlighting the urgency of their demands.

In a recent development, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah reached out to JI Vice Emir Liaquat Baloch, indicating that a meeting between JI’s leadership and Prime Minister Sharif is expected within the next two days. The outcome of this meeting could significantly influence the party’s planned actions.
