Pakistan Government Moves to Introduce New Cosmetics Law to Combat Smuggling

Pakistan Cosmetics Law

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government is set to introduce a new law aimed at regulating the cosmetics sector and curbing rampant smuggling. The Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology convened on Monday to review the Pakistan General Cosmetics Bill 2026, directing the Pakistan Cosmetics Manufacturers Association (PCMA) to register itself as part of the legislative process.

The committee’s chairperson emphasized the need for stringent regulations to protect local manufacturers and consumers from counterfeit and substandard products. The proposed legislation is expected to establish a framework that ensures quality control and compliance within the cosmetics industry, addressing concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the influx of smuggled goods.

This initiative is seen as a crucial step towards safeguarding public health and promoting fair competition in the cosmetics market. By regulating the industry, the government aims to enhance consumer trust and bolster the local economy, which has been adversely affected by illegal imports.

As the bill progresses, further discussions and consultations with industry representatives are anticipated. The committee plans to hold additional meetings to refine the legislation and address any emerging concerns, with the goal of presenting a comprehensive framework to the federal government for approval.
