Flu Cases Surge in Karachi Hospitals Amid Seasonal Weather Changes

Flu cases Karachi

KARACHI: Karachi is experiencing a significant increase in flu cases, with reports indicating a doubling of patients in local hospitals over the past week. Senior health experts attribute this surge to the recent seasonal shift towards winter, which has brought a drop in night-time temperatures.

According to Dr. Irfan Siddiqui, head of the emergency department at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), the number of patients presenting with flu-like symptoms has escalated from 30 to 40 cases per day to between 70 and 80. He noted that while flu symptoms have been prevalent for over a month, the recent uptick coincides with the changing weather conditions, prompting health officials to recommend precautionary measures.

This rise in flu cases is concerning for the local healthcare system, as it suggests a broader impact on the community. Dr. Siddiqui emphasized that many individuals initially seek treatment at local clinics, only turning to hospital emergency departments when their conditions worsen, indicating a potential underreporting of cases.

Health experts are urging residents to adopt preventive strategies, including frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and staying hydrated. As the flu season progresses, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and may implement additional public health measures to mitigate the outbreak.
