Experts Warn Washing Chicken Before Cooking Poses Health Risks
ISLAMABAD: Health experts are raising alarms about the common practice of washing chicken before cooking, suggesting it may lead to foodborne illnesses. This warning comes as part of a broader discussion on food safety and hygiene practices in Pakistan.
According to a recent report, many people believe that rinsing chicken with water is a necessary step for cleanliness. However, experts argue that this habit can actually spread harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella and Campylobacter, which are often present on raw poultry. Dr. Ayesha Khan, a food safety specialist, stated, “Washing chicken can aerosolize bacteria, contaminating kitchen surfaces and utensils, which increases the risk of illness. It is crucial to handle raw chicken with care and cook it thoroughly instead of washing it.”
This warning has significant implications for public health, particularly in a country where foodborne diseases are prevalent. The Ministry of Health has emphasized the importance of educating the public on safe food handling practices to reduce the incidence of food-related illnesses.
In response to these concerns, health officials are planning to launch a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting safe cooking practices. The campaign will include workshops and informational materials distributed through various media channels to reach a wide audience.
