Health Ministry Abolishes Flawed Vaccine Tender, New Procurement Planned
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of National Health Services has announced the cancellation of a flawed vaccine procurement tender and plans to issue a new one for meningococcal meningitis and influenza vaccines aimed at overseas travelers within the next month. This decision follows a high-level inquiry initiated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which uncovered significant irregularities in the previous public-private partnership contract.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal confirmed that the current vaccination process for religious pilgrims and overseas job seekers has been halted. He stated that all officials from the Border Health Services (BHS) involved in the unauthorized tender process have been arrested for circumventing ministry oversight. “I can assure that they will be held accountable for keeping the ministry in the dark,” Mr. Kamal emphasized.
This development raises concerns about the integrity of public health initiatives and the management of vaccine procurement in Pakistan. The decision to abolish the existing setup is expected to restore public confidence in the vaccination process, particularly for those traveling abroad for religious or employment purposes.
Looking ahead, the Ministry is set to release a new tender within a month, aiming to streamline the procurement process and ensure transparency. Stakeholders are urged to prepare for the upcoming changes, and pilgrims have been advised to arrange vaccinations through authorized travel agents to avoid further complications.
