Lawmakers Express Concerns Over KP Situation and Call for Electoral Reforms
ISLAMABAD: Lawmakers in Pakistan’s National Assembly and Senate voiced significant concerns on Thursday regarding the deteriorating political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and reported human rights violations, while also advocating for urgent electoral reforms and the strengthening of parliamentary institutions.
During the session, National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai criticized the government for its lack of transparency in recent diplomatic engagements with Tehran and its handling of relations with Afghanistan. He questioned, “How can four people decide the future of the whole nation?” and cautioned that such unilateral decisions could lead the country towards “anarchy and civil war.” Achakzai further condemned the suspension of trade with Afghanistan, emphasizing the historical ties between the two nations.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan echoed these sentiments, stating that the current parliamentary proceedings and the political climate in KP are fostering a negative perception among the populace. He urged for a more inclusive approach to governance that reflects the will of the people.
As discussions continue, lawmakers are expected to convene further meetings to address these pressing issues, with a focus on implementing reforms that enhance democratic processes and protect human rights in the region.
