Opposition Lawmakers Ignite Flares in Albanian Parliament Amid Protests

TIRANA: Opposition lawmakers in Albania set off smoke bombs and flares during a parliamentary session on Thursday, protesting Prime Minister Edi Rama’s handling of ongoing anti-government demonstrations in the capital.

Since mid-October, student activists have taken to the streets, demanding increased educational support and reiterating calls for Rama’s resignation. The protests have escalated, leading to violent clashes with police, resulting in over 350 injuries, including many officers, and numerous arrests.

The unrest highlights growing discontent among citizens regarding the government’s policies and its perceived neglect of pressing social issues. Analysts suggest that the ongoing protests could destabilize Rama’s administration, which has faced criticism for its response to public grievances.

As tensions rise, the opposition is expected to continue its demonstrations, with further protests planned in the coming days. The government has yet to respond to the escalating situation, raising concerns about potential further violence.
