PSL Franchises Set to Retain Seven Players Ahead of Upcoming Auction
LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises will be permitted to retain a maximum of seven players, including their direct signings, for the 12th edition of the tournament. However, any team opting for the full retention allowance must release one player from the highest price tier of the previous auction into the general player pool.
This regulation was unanimously approved by all eight franchises during a tournament operations workshop held at Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday. It is part of the key regulations finalized ahead of the PSL 12 player auction scheduled for January 23.
The mandatory release of a top-tier player aims to ensure that elite talent remains accessible to all franchises during the auction while allowing teams to retain a significant portion of their existing squads. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) emphasized that this arrangement would create a “live, data-driven link” to enhance the competitive balance of the league.
The deadline for player retentions is set for January 13, ten days prior to the auction. This timeline allows franchises to evaluate player performances in the National T20 Silver tournament, which will conclude shortly, alongside the ongoing National T20 Gold competition before making their final retention decisions.
