Pakistan Moves to Transform Eurobond Debt into Digital Tokens

Eurobond Debt Digital Tokens

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is exploring the conversion of its existing Eurobond debt into digital tokens as part of a broader initiative to modernize its financial sector through blockchain technology. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced this proposal on Monday during a dialogue on digital assets, organized by the Pakistan Banks’ Association in collaboration with the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).

The Ministry of Finance is currently reviewing this innovative initiative and plans to seek Cabinet approval before issuing a request for proposals (RFP). While the government has not finalized the plan or initiated the bidding process, the proposal aims to assess how tokenization can be effectively applied to Pakistan’s existing sovereign debt.

This initiative could significantly impact Pakistan’s financial landscape, potentially enhancing transparency and efficiency in debt management. By leveraging blockchain technology, the government hopes to attract foreign investment and improve the overall economic environment, which has faced challenges in recent years.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Finance is expected to present its findings to the Cabinet in the coming weeks, paving the way for further discussions on the implementation of this digital transformation in the country’s financial framework.
