TBLISI: In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Maliha Ali from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, triumphed over Russia’s Veronika Drozdova at the IMMAF World Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia. The 24-year-old athlete secured victory by split decision in their featherweight (65.8kg) bout, marking a significant achievement against a two-time European champion.

Maliha, who has previously earned accolades as a wushu champion and a national kickboxing gold medallist, entered the tournament following a silver medal performance at the IMMAF World Cup in Angola earlier this year. Her victory against Drozdova not only showcases her talent but also highlights the growing prominence of Pakistani athletes on the international stage.

The fight unfolded with Maliha adopting a cautious approach, initially keeping her distance before effectively closing in and pinning Drozdova against the cage. She landed clean strikes to finish the first round strongly, despite Drozdova managing to connect with a few overhand lefts. In the second round, Maliha dominated the match, executing a successful takedown and delivering heavy blows from full mount. However, the exertion began to take its toll as the fight progressed.

As Maliha prepares for her next challenge, this victory serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in Pakistan and underscores the potential for success in combat sports. The MMA community eagerly anticipates her future performances as she continues to represent her country on the world stage.
