Zelensky Denounces ‘Horrific’ Russian Attack on Corn-Laden Vessel in Black Sea

KIEV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a ‘horrific’ Russian strike on a Turkish-owned vessel carrying corn in the Black Sea, which resulted in the death of the ship’s captain and the rescue of 11 crew members. The attack occurred on Tuesday, escalating tensions in a region already fraught with conflict.

Zelensky described the incident as a blatant violation of international maritime law, emphasizing the need for accountability. ‘This act of aggression not only threatens global food security but also undermines the principles of safe navigation in international waters,’ he stated during a press briefing. The Ukrainian Navy has confirmed that the vessel was targeted while en route to a port in Turkey.

This incident raises significant concerns regarding the safety of maritime operations in the Black Sea, a crucial route for grain exports from Ukraine. Analysts warn that such attacks could deter shipping companies from operating in the region, potentially exacerbating the global food crisis and impacting economies reliant on Ukrainian agricultural products.

In response to the attack, Ukraine is expected to call for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the implications of Russia’s actions. Additionally, international maritime organizations may be urged to enhance security measures for vessels operating in the Black Sea.
