Pakistan Reports Sixth Polio Case of 2023, Urgent Vaccination Campaign Planned

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reported its sixth polio case of the year, as confirmed by the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication (NEOC) on Monday. The latest case emerged from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khyber district, involving a seven-year-old boy from Union Council Ghundi-A in Jamrud tehsil.

The NEOC statement emphasized that the Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative is undertaking a thorough investigation into the case. In response, officials are planning additional measures to safeguard children, including a vaccination campaign that will administer both oral and injectable vaccines to older children, alongside enhancements to routine immunization efforts.

This alarming development comes shortly after the fifth polio case of the year was reported on September 29, highlighting a concerning trend as five of the six cases in 2023 have been identified in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with four specifically from the Bannu division. The resurgence of polio cases poses significant public health risks and underscores the ongoing challenges faced by health authorities in eradicating the virus.

In light of these developments, health officials are mobilizing resources for an immediate response, including a weeklong sub-national vaccination campaign aimed at reaching vulnerable populations. The urgency of these measures reflects the critical need to protect children and prevent further outbreaks in the region.
