PM Shehbaz Sharif Approves Livestock Export Expansion Plan to Boost Economy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved a comprehensive plan aimed at expanding livestock exports through the importation of high-yield breeds, which will be raised at specialised farms before being exported.

During a meeting to review ongoing reforms in the livestock sector, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for establishing specialised farms dedicated to livestock exports. He directed that imports of high-breed livestock for these farms be exempt from duties, facilitating a more robust export framework.

This initiative is expected to significantly enhance Pakistan’s livestock sector, which currently accounts for over 60% of the agricultural economy. By modernising the sector along corporate lines and leveraging private-sector expertise, the government aims to improve efficiency and productivity, ultimately benefiting farmers and the economy.

Next steps include the implementation of a modern animal-tagging system to ensure traceability and quality control for exported livestock. The government plans to engage with private-sector experts to develop and execute these reforms, with further meetings scheduled to monitor progress.
