SBP Launches Electronic Cheque Clearing System Starting October 15
ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is set to revolutionize the banking sector by initiating a pilot program for electronic cheque clearing starting October 15. This innovative system will allow cheques to be cleared through electronic images, eliminating the need for physical paper and enhancing efficiency in financial transactions across the country.
The Pakistan Express Clearing System (PECS) is grounded in the cheque truncation concept outlined in the Payment Systems and Electronic Fund Transfers Act. This transition aims to streamline the cheque processing system, reduce operational costs, and improve the overall banking experience for consumers and businesses alike. An SBP official stated, “This move is a significant step towards modernizing our payment systems and aligning with global best practices in financial technology.”
The implementation of electronic cheque clearing is expected to have far-reaching implications for the economy. By facilitating quicker transactions, it will enhance liquidity in the market and potentially lower transaction costs for businesses. Moreover, this initiative is likely to encourage more individuals to engage with digital banking services, thereby fostering financial inclusion in a country where a significant portion of the population remains unbanked.
Following the pilot phase, the SBP plans to roll out nationwide coverage by April 30, 2027. Stakeholders in the banking sector are urged to prepare for this transition, with further guidelines and training sessions expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
