IMF Approves Continuation of Fuel Subsidy for Existing Beneficiaries Only

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed to extend the Prime Minister’s fuel subsidy for current beneficiaries while prohibiting the inclusion of new consumers, according to sources on Tuesday.

The IMF’s decision comes amid ongoing economic challenges faced by Pakistan, where the Fund has stipulated that the petrol subsidy should be limited to motorcycles, three-wheelers, and vehicles with engines up to 800cc. This measure aims to ensure that the subsidy is targeted towards the most vulnerable segments of the population.

This development has significant implications for the Pakistani economy, as it seeks to balance fiscal responsibility with the need to support low-income citizens amid rising fuel prices. The restriction on new beneficiaries may lead to public discontent, particularly among those who were hoping to benefit from the subsidy.

Looking ahead, the Pakistani government is expected to engage in further discussions with the IMF to clarify the terms of the subsidy and explore additional economic reforms. The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial for Pakistan’s financial stability and its relationship with international financial institutions.
