Shubman Gill’s Unbeaten 223 Leads India to Historic ODI Chase Victory

GUWAHATI: Captain Shubman Gill’s remarkable unbeaten 223 propelled India to a stunning victory over the West Indies, achieving the second-highest successful chase in ODI history by reaching a target of 406 runs with eight wickets in hand on Wednesday.

The West Indies set a formidable total of 405-7, bolstered by three centuries in their innings. However, India responded with a formidable 255-run opening partnership between Gill and Rohit Sharma, who scored 101, allowing them to surpass the target with 39 balls to spare, thus securing a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

This victory places India just behind South Africa, who holds the record for the highest successful ODI chase of 438-9 against Australia in 2006. India’s previous best chase was 362 runs against Australia in Jaipur in 2019. Gill’s innings not only surpassed his previous ODI best of 208 but also marked the fastest double century in ODI history, achieved in just 117 balls, featuring 26 fours and eight sixes.
