Archaeologists Uncover Ancient Structure in Jandial, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

KHANPUR: Archaeologists have made a significant discovery at Jandial in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, unveiling an ancient structure measuring nearly 100 metres long and 50 metres wide. This previously unstudied monument, known as Jandial D, is located opposite the renowned Ionic temple of Jandial, just outside the ancient fortified city of Sirkap.

The discovery, announced in a press release on Friday, is expected to open new avenues for understanding the history and urban landscape of the Gandhara civilization. First noted by British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham in 1864, the site had remained largely unexplored for over a century, highlighting the potential for further archaeological research in the region.

This finding not only enriches the historical narrative of Gandhara but also underscores the importance of preserving and studying such sites, which are crucial for understanding the cultural heritage of Pakistan. Experts believe that the excavation could lead to insights into the urban planning and architectural practices of ancient civilizations in the area.

Moving forward, archaeologists plan to conduct more extensive excavations at the site, aiming to uncover additional artifacts and structures that could provide further context to the region’s historical significance. The local government has expressed its commitment to supporting these efforts, recognizing the potential for tourism and education that such discoveries can bring.
