K-Electric Considers Load Management Amid LNG Supply Shortages

KARACHI: K-Electric, the primary power utility for Karachi, announced on Friday that it may need to implement load management as an extreme measure during peak evening and night hours due to a shortage of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG). This shortage has arisen from global supply disruptions and delayed cargo deliveries.

Imran Rana, a spokesperson for K-Electric, stated that the nationwide RLNG constraints are impacting power generation across the country, including in K-Electric’s service area. He emphasized that while daytime electricity supply is expected to remain stable, load management may become necessary during peak hours if the situation does not improve. Rana expressed that the utility is in close coordination with Pakistan LNG Limited and other relevant authorities to expedite the normalization of supply and apologized for any inconvenience caused to consumers.

This potential load management could have significant implications for Karachi’s residents, particularly during the evening hours when demand typically peaks. The energy crisis, exacerbated by international supply chain issues, raises concerns about the reliability of electricity in one of Pakistan’s largest cities, potentially affecting businesses and daily life.

K-Electric is actively monitoring the situation and is expected to provide updates as it works with authorities to resolve the supply issues. Consumers are advised to stay informed about any changes in electricity availability as the utility navigates these challenges.
