Lyon Falls to Lens, Misses Chance to Top Ligue 1 Standings
LENS: Olympique Lyonnais squandered the opportunity to ascend to the top of Ligue 1 on Friday, suffering their first defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss against RC Lens at the rain-soaked Stade Bollaert.
Florian Sotoca opened the scoring for Lens just before halftime, followed by Matthieu Udol’s header that doubled their lead in the 76th minute. Although Udol was sent off shortly after for a reckless tackle on Lyon’s Khalis Merah, who managed to score a consolation goal, it was not enough to change the outcome.
This victory marks Yannick Cahuzac’s first win as Lens coach after taking over from Dino Toppmoller, who was dismissed last month following a disappointing start. The win also ended a four-match winless streak for Lens, propelling them to seventh place in the league and providing a much-needed morale boost ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon.
Lyon, now two points behind league leaders AS Monaco, faces a crucial Europa League match against last season’s UEFA Conference League winners, Crystal Palace, on Thursday. Coach Paulo Fonseca expressed concerns over his team’s defensive performance, stating, “Defensively we had problems because the team was too stretched and did not press the way we wanted. We gave the first 45 minutes to Lens.”
