IT Minister Shaza Fatima to Receive Civil Award for Digital Petrol Subsidy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja will be conferred a prestigious national award on Pakistan Day, March 23, in recognition of her pivotal role in designing and executing the federal government’s digital petrol subsidy scheme. Speaking during an afternoon tea hosted for federal cabinet members in Islamabad, the prime minister commended the IT Ministry’s exceptional efforts in delivering a robust technological infrastructure designed to provide targeted financial relief to vulnerable citizens.

The national honor comes as a notable acknowledgment of cross-departmental innovation, with the IT leadership being decorated for an initiative traditionally falling under the domain of the Petroleum Ministry. Premier Sharif highlighted that the digital architecture developed under Khawaja’s direction ensured transparent beneficiary verification, seamless fund disbursements, and the mitigation of systemic leakages that previously plagued fuel subsidy mechanisms. Sources present at the meeting noted that the prime minister praised the collaborative drive between tech experts and financial institutions that allowed the system to go live in record time.

Analysts view this development as a significant milestone in Pakistan’s transition toward data-driven governance and targeted welfare delivery. By replacing indiscriminate blanket subsidies with precise digital financial mechanisms, the federal administration aims to optimize fiscal expenditures while supporting low-income households struggling against inflationary pressures. The initiative is also expected to accelerate digital financial inclusion, encouraging unregistered commuters and small vehicle owners to join formal banking and mobile wallet networks.

The civil award will be officially conferred during the formal investiture ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on March 23. Moving forward, the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication plans to replicate this digital framework across other social safety net programs, with upcoming rollouts aimed at modernizing public service delivery and streamlining federal subsidy disbursements nationwide.
