Middle-School Pupil Shoots Teachers with Hunting Rifle in Southern France

MARSEILLE: A 14-year-old middle-school pupil opened fire at Joseph Lakanal College on Monday, wounding the head teacher and a female staff member with a hunting rifle, causing chaos as students sought safety.

The local mayor, Jean-Pierre Squillari, reported that a supervisor successfully disarmed the shooter before police arrived. Both victims were hospitalized but fortunately did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The incident has raised concerns about school safety in France.

While there is currently no evidence linking this shooting to the ongoing protests that have recently affected high schools across the country, President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence associated with these demonstrations earlier on the same day.

According to BFM TV, the shooter concealed the rifle in a guitar case upon entering the school. Authorities are investigating how the student managed to bring the weapon onto school grounds and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
