Coventry City Secures Historic Win Over Newcastle to Escape Relegation Zone
COVENTRY: Coventry City made Premier League history on Monday with a commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle United, propelling them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.
Under the guidance of manager Frank Lampard, Coventry became the first club in 127 years to achieve back-to-back wins in the English top-flight after losing their opening four matches without scoring. Jack Rudoni opened the scoring with a penalty, marking the club’s first-ever Premier League goal at the CBS Arena, their home since 2005. Guinean forward Sidiki Cherif doubled the lead after halftime, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess.
Despite a response from Newcastle’s Sven Botman, who scored to narrow the gap, Coventry’s Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni sealed the win with late goals, ensuring the Sky Blues jumped from 19th to 14th place in the league standings. This victory also marked Coventry’s first win over Newcastle since 1999, significantly boosting their hopes of avoiding relegation in their first Premier League season since 2001.
Looking ahead, Coventry aims to extend their winning streak as they prepare to face a struggling Tottenham Hotspur on October 19. Lampard expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “Today we showed a lot of energy and demonstrated our abilities.”
