Passenger Killed After Rehman Baba Express Train Meets Accident in Multan
MULTAN: At least one passenger was killed and several others sustained injuries after the Peshawar-bound Rehman Baba Express met with an accident near Multan, prompting an immediate mobilization of emergency responders and severely disrupting rail operations along the country’s central corridor.
The express train, which operates between Karachi and Peshawar, encountered the mishap during its scheduled transit through the Multan division. Rescue 1122 personnel and Pakistan Railways relief teams rushed to the site shortly after local authorities sounded the alarm. First responders evacuated passengers from the affected coaches and transported the deceased along with the injured to Nishtar Hospital Multan for urgent medical treatment.
The tragic event has once again cast a spotlight on the precarious state of Pakistan’s rail network, which has long struggled with outdated signaling systems, deteriorating tracks, and chronic underfunding. Safety advocates and commuter organizations have consistently voiced concern over recurring railway accidents across Punjab and Sindh, demanding comprehensive overhauls to safeguard the millions of passengers who rely on intercity rail transit annually.
In response to the incident, Pakistan Railways officials announced the temporary suspension of traffic on the affected track section to expedite clearance operations and technical assessments. The Ministry of Railways has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the operational failure and determine whether technical defects, track anomalies, or human error caused the fatal crash.
