Govt Denies Involvement in Alleged Abduction of Anchorperson Iqrarul Hassan

LAHORE: Prominent television anchor Iqrarul Hassan was reportedly taken from his home in Lahore by unidentified men in plainclothes early Monday morning, according to his family. The incident occurred around 3 AM when the men allegedly broke into his residence in the DHA area, raising concerns about the safety of journalists in Pakistan.

Farah Iqrar, Hassan’s wife, described the harrowing experience, stating that the intruders not only forcibly entered their home but also manhandled her during the operation. She claimed that the men confiscated two mobile phones belonging to her husband, a laptop, and her own mobile phone. Punjab Minister Azma Bokhari later clarified that the police had not arrested Hassan and that the situation is currently under investigation.

This incident has sparked widespread concern regarding the treatment of media personnel in Pakistan, especially given the increasing instances of harassment and intimidation faced by journalists. The involvement of individuals claiming to represent the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) adds a layer of complexity to the case, prompting questions about the agency’s role and accountability.

Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, with calls for transparency and accountability from various quarters. The incident has drawn attention to the broader implications for press freedom in Pakistan, as journalists continue to navigate a challenging landscape.
