Pakistan Faces Severe Hunger Crisis as Economic Instability Worsens
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been identified as the worst affected country in South Asia according to the 2026 Global Hunger Index, released on Wednesday. This alarming report highlights a deepening food security crisis exacerbated by economic instability, climate-related disasters, and ongoing global conflicts.
The Global Hunger Index, published by Welthungerhilfe, the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict at Ruhr University Bochum, and the Swiss organization Helvetas, underscores that progress in South Asia has stagnated, with conditions in Pakistan and Afghanistan deteriorating since 2018. In Pakistan, the economic downturn and soaring food prices have severely diminished household purchasing power, leading to increased undernourishment and child wasting rates.
The situation across South Asia remains critical, with a regional score of 23.5, indicating serious hunger levels. The report’s theme, “No Security Without Food Security,” emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address food insecurity, which poses significant risks to the health and stability of the population.
In light of these findings, experts are calling for immediate government action and international support to mitigate the crisis. Upcoming discussions among policymakers and humanitarian organizations are expected to focus on developing effective interventions to improve food access and address the underlying economic challenges.
