Lahore ATC Extends Hammad Azhar’s Remand in Jinnah House Attack Case

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) has extended the physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar by 12 days in connection with the Jinnah House attack case stemming from the May 9 riots. The extension was granted during a hearing on Thursday, where the investigating officer requested additional time to conduct a polygraph test on Azhar.

During the proceedings, ATC Judge Sardar Muhammad Akram heard arguments from both sides. The investigating officer alleged that Azhar played a significant role in leading the attack on Jinnah House, which was targeted during protests against the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Defence counsel Sikandar Zulqarnain contested the remand extension, claiming that the officer had altered his position regarding the evidence against Azhar.

This development raises concerns about the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan, particularly as the PTI continues to face scrutiny following the violent protests. The case against Azhar is emblematic of the broader crackdown on PTI leaders and supporters, which critics argue undermines democratic processes and freedom of expression in the country.

Looking ahead, the court is expected to hear further arguments regarding the evidence and the necessity of the remand in the coming days. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the PTI and its leadership as they navigate the current political landscape.
