ECP Rejects Punjab’s Proposal to Delay Local Government Elections to April 2027
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decisively rejected the Punjab government’s proposal to postpone local government elections to April 2027, which was suggested due to concerns over adverse weather conditions.
Earlier this month, the ECP had proposed holding the elections on December 14, sending a draft schedule to the Punjab chief secretary. However, the provincial government responded with a request to conduct the elections in phases on April 4, 11, and 18, citing the expected challenges posed by smog and dense fog during the winter months.
This rejection underscores the ECP’s commitment to maintaining the electoral timeline, which is crucial for local governance and democratic processes in Punjab. The decision, made during a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, reflects the ECP’s stance on ensuring timely elections despite the Punjab government’s concerns.
Looking ahead, the ECP is expected to reaffirm its December timeline and may face further discussions with the Punjab government regarding logistical preparations for the elections. The situation remains fluid as stakeholders assess the implications of this decision on local governance and electoral integrity.
