Israeli Firm Exploits Online Ads for Extensive Spy Operations, Reports Reveal
WASHINGTON: An Israeli digital advertising agency, Discover-Tech, has been implicated in a vast espionage operation that utilized online advertisements to spy on internet users, according to research released by two independent groups on Thursday.
The reports from Citizen Lab, a Canadian cyber watchdog, and Confiant, a New York-based advertising security firm, reveal that Discover-Tech’s services provided access to advertising platforms operated by major companies including Google and Comcast, as well as Russia’s Yandex. This access facilitated operations for Candiru, a spyware firm that has been blacklisted by the U.S. government.
Wolfie Cristl, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, emphasized the systemic security threat posed by the current online advertising framework, stating, “The way online advertising works today is a systemic security threat for states, the private sector, civil society, and everyone else alike.” The ads, often promoting everyday products like phones and earbuds, reached over 120,000 websites and 75,000 apps, raising significant privacy concerns.
As the implications of these findings unfold, there are growing calls for stricter regulations on online advertising practices to protect user privacy and prevent misuse by surveillance entities. Investigations into the extent of these operations and potential legal ramifications for involved parties are expected to follow.
