West Nile Virus Outbreak in Europe Claims Nearly 150 Lives in 2026

BRUSSELS: The West Nile virus outbreak in Europe continues to escalate, with reports indicating that nearly 150 fatalities have occurred in 2026 alone. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirmed on Thursday that the virus has spread across 18 countries since the beginning of the year.

Health officials are alarmed by the rapid transmission of the virus, which is primarily spread by mosquitoes. The EFSA and ECDC have urged local governments to enhance surveillance and preventive measures to mitigate the outbreak’s impact. “The situation is concerning, and immediate action is necessary to protect public health,” stated an EFSA spokesperson.

This outbreak poses significant risks not only to public health but also to the European economy, particularly in sectors reliant on outdoor activities and tourism. The rising number of cases may lead to increased healthcare costs and a potential decline in tourism, as travelers may avoid affected regions.

In response to the outbreak, health authorities are expected to convene emergency meetings to discuss strategies for controlling the virus’s spread. Enhanced public awareness campaigns and mosquito control initiatives are anticipated as part of the immediate response plan.
