Christian Leaders Call for Reforms in Sindh Family Laws to Ensure Equality

KARACHI: Clergy leaders from various Christian denominations in Sindh convened on Saturday to discuss the proposed Sindh Christian Family Laws Bill-2026, emphasizing the need for denominational parity and consultation in the legislative process.

During a press conference held at the Philadelphia Pentecostal Church of Pakistan, representatives from Pentecostal, Associate Reformed Presbyterian, Presbyterian, Baptist/Brethren, Methodist, and Evangelical churches expressed their support for the bill, which aims to enhance the legal rights and protections for Christian families in the province. They praised the legislative initiative as a significant step after 154 years of absence of such laws.

The proposed reforms include establishing 18 years as the minimum legal age for marriage for both men and women, ensuring that marriages are contracted between two Christian parties, and providing legal safeguards for marriage registration, consent, maintenance, and child protection. The clergy underscored the importance of clear legislative language and fair procedures to effectively implement these reforms.

Looking ahead, the clergy leaders called for ongoing dialogue with lawmakers to ensure that the final legislation reflects the diverse needs of the Christian community in Sindh. They believe that successful implementation of these laws will not only protect families but also foster a more inclusive society.
