Singaporeans Queue for N95 Masks as Haze Levels Reach Dangerous Highs
SINGAPORE: Residents across Singapore are lining up at community clubs to collect N95 masks as persistent haze continues to envelop the island, exacerbated by recent weather conditions. Despite early morning rain, the air quality remains poor, prompting many to seek protective gear.
The People’s Association (PA) initiated the mask distribution and opened haze shelters on October 14, coinciding with a spike in PM2.5 levels above 200 in various regions. As of 5 PM on October 15, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) indicated unhealthy air quality, with readings of 188 in the west and 186 in the central area, reflecting widespread concern among residents.
This ongoing haze crisis, attributed to dense smoke from fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has warned that conditions are unlikely to improve before October 18, leaving citizens to navigate the challenges of poor air quality.
Looking ahead, the NEA is expected to provide further updates on air quality and potential measures to mitigate the impact of the haze. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and utilize available resources, including haze shelters, to protect their health during this environmental crisis.
