Pakistan Limits Load Shedding to Theft-Hit Transformers Starting June

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, announced that starting June next year, load shedding will be restricted to transformers in areas plagued by electricity theft, rather than affecting entire feeders. This strategic shift aims to address the ongoing challenges posed by rampant power theft in various regions.

During a press briefing following his inspection of the expansion project at Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari International Airport, Leghari emphasized that the government is taking decisive steps to mitigate the impact of load shedding on law-abiding citizens. He stated, “This targeted approach will ensure that those who are contributing to the theft of electricity bear the brunt of the consequences, rather than innocent consumers who pay their bills on time.”

This policy change is expected to have significant implications for both consumers and the energy sector. By focusing on theft-hit transformers, the government aims to reduce the overall duration of load shedding, thereby improving the reliability of electricity supply for compliant users. Experts believe this could also incentivize better compliance among consumers, as the repercussions of theft become more pronounced.

Looking ahead, the Energy Ministry plans to implement this new strategy in phases, with further details to be released in upcoming meetings. Stakeholders from various sectors will be consulted to ensure a smooth transition and to address any potential challenges that may arise during the implementation process.
