Parliamentary Committee Proposes Rs5,000 Wheat Support Price for Rabi Season
ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary committee has recommended that the federal government establish a minimum support price of Rs5,000 per 40kg for wheat for the upcoming 2026-27 Rabi season, emphasizing the need for a uniform subsidy mechanism for farmers nationwide.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research convened on Thursday under the leadership of Syed Tariq Hussain. The committee underscored the urgency for the government to finalize a national wheat policy covering the 2026-30 period prior to the commencement of the wheat sowing season, noting that decisions made post-sowing would hold little practical value for farmers.
This recommendation aims to bolster the agricultural sector, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their produce, which is crucial for the economy. The committee’s call for a uniform subsidy program is intended to alleviate disparities among farmers across different regions, thereby promoting equity in agricultural support.
Moving forward, the committee has directed the Ministry of National Food Security to expedite decisions regarding the minimum support price and the subsidy program. Additionally, the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority (NSDRA) has been tasked with updating the committee on its progress since 2024 and submitting the necessary rules and regulations.
