UAE Investigates Possible Terror Link in Flydubai Co-Pilot Incident
DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation into a potential terrorist link following an alarming incident involving a co-pilot attempting to crash a Flydubai passenger jet en route to Israel. The incident occurred on Wednesday, resulting in an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
The flight, designated FZ1073, was diverted after the injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers to subdue the co-pilot, who had initiated a dangerous nosedive, losing nearly 14,000 feet in altitude within 30 seconds. Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, passengers were greeted with a hero’s welcome from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Initial assessments from Israeli authorities suggest that the co-pilot acted alone, although mental health issues have not been ruled out as a contributing factor. The airline confirmed that an off-duty crew member played a crucial role in safely landing the aircraft in Tabuk, while both pilots were subsequently hospitalized due to their injuries.
The UAE’s investigation is expected to delve into the co-pilot’s background and motivations, with broader implications for aviation security and international relations, particularly between the UAE and Israel. Authorities are likely to enhance security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
