Nagoya Mayor Apologizes for National Anthem Errors at Asian Para Games
NAGOYA: The Asian Para Games in Japan’s Nagoya faced a significant blunder this week as incorrect national anthems were played three times, prompting an apology from the city’s mayor. This incident follows a series of mishaps during the recently concluded Asian Games, raising concerns about the event’s organization.
Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa addressed the media on Wednesday, expressing regret over the errors, which occurred despite prior assurances from officials to ensure the correct anthems would be played. “These things happened during the Asian Games, so of course the operations were reviewed and examined based on the lessons learned. The fact that it happened again is really just unacceptable,” he stated during a press conference.
The first incident occurred on Monday when a Taiwanese athlete won a men’s para taekwondo competition, yet the Iranian anthem was played in its entirety. This mistake was acknowledged by officials only after the ceremony had concluded. The Iranian anthem was mistakenly played again later that day during a women’s para taekwondo event featuring a Mongolian competitor.
This series of errors not only tarnishes the reputation of the Asian Para Games but also raises questions about the preparedness of the organizing committee. As the games continue through Saturday, officials are under pressure to rectify these issues and restore confidence among athletes and spectators alike.
