Syria Reopens Key Border Crossing with Jordan After Diplomatic Strain

Syria Jordan border crossing

DAMASCUS: Syria has reopened its main border crossing with Jordan, the Nassib crossing, on Wednesday, marking a significant step in mending ties that were severely strained following a deadly retaliatory strike by Jordanian forces. The reopening comes in the wake of a gun attack on a church in southern Jordan, which prompted the Jordanian military to respond with airstrikes that reportedly killed over 20 fighters.

In a statement, a senior Syrian customs official, Mazen Alloush, confirmed that both passenger and commercial movement would resume as normal from Wednesday morning. The Jordanian government expressed regret for the civilian casualties resulting from its military action, emphasizing its respect for Syria and the importance of maintaining peaceful relations.

This development is crucial for both nations, as the Nassib crossing serves as a vital trade route and a lifeline for many citizens in the region. The recent tensions had not only disrupted trade but also raised concerns about security and stability along the border, which has been a flashpoint since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in 2024.

Looking ahead, both countries are expected to engage in further diplomatic discussions to solidify their renewed ties and address any lingering issues. The reopening of the border crossing may pave the way for increased economic cooperation and a more stable regional environment.
