Critics Challenge Environmental Review of Karachi’s Nehr-i-Khayyam Project

Nehr-i-Khayyam project

KARACHI: As construction progresses on the controversial Nehr-i-Khayyam rehabilitation project, critics express skepticism over the government’s recent request for an environmental review. Despite the project being well underway, the Sindh government has sought an assessment from the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) to address growing public concerns.

The project manager of Karachi’s mega projects sent a letter to Sepa’s director general on October 26, requesting an examination of the rehabilitation scheme, which includes the diversion of sewerage water in District South. The letter sought guidance on environmental protection requirements and necessary approvals under applicable laws. However, insiders from Sepa have voiced doubts, stating that a credible and independent assessment is impossible at this advanced stage of construction.

This situation raises significant concerns for local residents and environmental advocates, who argue that the government’s actions appear to be mere “eyewash.” The ongoing construction has sparked protests and heightened scrutiny, as many fear the project’s potential negative impacts on the environment and public health.

Looking ahead, the government has indicated that construction will continue while Sepa conducts its review. Stakeholders are calling for transparency and accountability in the process, urging the authorities to halt construction until a thorough environmental assessment is completed. The outcome of this review could have lasting implications for future infrastructure projects in Karachi and beyond.
