Gold Prices Plunge Sharply in Pakistan Amid Global Market Decline

KARACHI: Gold and silver prices in Pakistan witnessed a massive decline today in line with international market trends, bringing temporary relief to local consumers and investors. According to the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Association (APGJA), the price of 24-karat gold per tola plummeted by Rs 4,300, settling at Rs 436,336. Similarly, the price of 10 grams of gold recorded a substantial decrease of Rs 3,687, dropping to Rs 374,088, reflecting a sharp correction in the precious metal’s valuation.

The domestic market adjustment closely follows a downward trend in the global bullion market, where gold prices fell amid shifting investor sentiments, a strengthening US dollar, and changing economic indicators in major global economies. Silver prices in the local market also experienced a corresponding dip, aligning with the broader bearish sentiment. Market analysts note that the sudden drop has triggered increased inquiry from retail buyers who had been sidelined by record-high prices in recent weeks.

This substantial decrease in gold prices in Pakistan comes at a critical time when high inflation has severely impacted consumer purchasing power. Gold is traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset and a primary hedge against inflation in the country, making its price fluctuations highly influential on public savings and the wedding season economy. Financial experts suggest that the current dip might offer a temporary window of opportunity for physical buyers, though volatility remains expected due to fluctuating international oil prices and geopolitical developments.

Looking ahead, local commodity experts advise caution, stating that domestic gold rates will continue to track the US dollar exchange rate and international market movements closely. The APGJA is expected to monitor the situation daily to issue updated rate sheets, while local jewelers anticipate a short-term surge in retail demand if prices stabilize at these lower levels in the coming days.
