Punjab Assembly Urges Immediate Reopening of Kartarpur Corridor

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Assembly in India has unanimously passed a resolution demanding the immediate reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor. This significant move, reported on November 1, 2026, comes amid ongoing discussions about cross-border access for Sikh pilgrims.

The resolution was introduced by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, who emphasized the importance of the corridor for the Sikh community. He stated, “The reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor is vital for the spiritual and cultural connection of Sikhs with their holy sites in Pakistan, especially in light of recent restrictions that have hindered pilgrimages.”

This development holds considerable implications for India-Pakistan relations, particularly in the context of religious tourism and cultural exchanges. The Kartarpur Corridor, which connects the Indian town of Dera Baba Nanak to the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan, was inaugurated in 2019 but has faced operational challenges due to political tensions.

Looking ahead, the Punjab Assembly’s resolution may prompt further discussions between Indian and Pakistani officials regarding the corridor’s status. Stakeholders are hopeful that this initiative will lead to a renewed focus on facilitating easier access for pilgrims, fostering goodwill between the two nations.
