PESHAWAR: Pakistan’s polio case count has reached eight this year following the confirmation of a new case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The latest infection was reported in a child from the Dera Ismail Khan district, raising alarms among health officials and prompting renewed calls for vaccination efforts.

Health authorities have emphasized the importance of immunization, stating that the resurgence of polio is a significant setback in the country’s ongoing battle against the disease. Dr. Faisal Sultan, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health, remarked, “Every case of polio is a reminder of the work that lies ahead in ensuring every child is vaccinated. We must intensify our efforts to eradicate this disease once and for all.”

The implications of this new case are profound, as Pakistan has struggled with polio eradication for years, facing challenges such as misinformation about vaccines and access issues in remote areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the situation, urging the government to enhance vaccination campaigns and address public hesitancy.

In response to the rising cases, the health ministry plans to launch an emergency vaccination drive in the affected regions, aiming to reach millions of children. Officials are also set to convene a meeting next week to discuss strategies for improving vaccination rates and combating misinformation surrounding the polio vaccine.
