Gadi Eisenkot Gains Arab Support to Form Next Israeli Government
JERUSALEM: Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief, is poised to form Israel’s next government following the backing of the country’s largest Arab political list. This support enhances his prospects against incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently lost the backing of a key religious ally.
President Isaac Herzog is currently in the midst of consultations with various political parties after the October 27 elections, where neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot secured a majority. Traditionally, the president selects the candidate recommended by the most parties, a position that Eisenkot now occupies thanks to the Arab lists’ unprecedented 19 seats in the Knesset.
The Joint List, which won 11 seats, announced its decision to support Eisenkot, stating it would formally inform Herzog of its recommendation. This development positions the Arab-majority parties as potential kingmakers in the formation of the new government, although it remains uncertain whether Eisenkot’s opposition will collaborate with them.
As Herzog continues his consultations, the political landscape in Israel is shifting. Eisenkot’s commitment to national unity may resonate with voters seeking stability after years of conflict and division. The next steps will involve further discussions among party leaders, with the possibility of coalition negotiations that could reshape Israel’s governance.
