Shafay Hussain Stands Firmly by Brother Amid Controversy with Maryam Nawaz
LAHORE: Punjab Commerce and Investment Minister Shafay Hussain of the PML-Q has publicly declared his unwavering support for his younger brother, Salik Hussain, the Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis, amidst a brewing controversy involving Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
In an exclusive statement to Dawn on Thursday, Shafay Hussain emphasized, βI have and will never distance myself from my younger brother. My brother is an independent person with his own independent views.β This declaration comes in the wake of a Rs5 billion defamation notice served by Maryam Nawaz to Salik Hussain, demanding a retraction of his corruption allegations against her government. Despite the pressure, Salik has vowed to respond to the notice.
Defending his brother’s stance, Shafay suggested that Salik may possess information regarding corruption that he himself is unaware of. He clarified, βSalik Hussain never named Maryam Nawaz and never intended to say anything about her nor the Punjab government, but I believe he was referring to the systematic corruption that we all agree exists.β He called for greater tolerance among politicians, urging them to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences.
The ongoing dispute highlights the growing tensions within Punjab’s political landscape and raises questions about accountability and transparency in governance. As the situation develops, observers will be keenly watching for any further statements from both parties and potential legal ramifications stemming from the defamation notice.
