Japanese Minister Blames Elon Musk’s X for Diplomatic Misunderstanding

TOKYO: Japanese Trade Minister Ryosei Akazawa has attributed a potential diplomatic faux pas to the automatic translation feature of Elon Musk’s X social media platform. On Friday, Akazawa expressed concern that a mistranslation could have led to misunderstandings regarding his knowledge of world leaders during a recent meeting with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

In a statement to reporters, Akazawa clarified that he is well aware of the current Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s identity, following a post that mistakenly identified Rahman as the ousted leader Sheikh Hasina. The minister emphasized, “This is actually a serious matter. It is possible that the Bangladeshi public might be left with the impression that Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry does not even know who our (Bangladeshi) prime minister is.”

The original post, shared on October 28, included photographs of Akazawa with Rahman but was altered by X’s translation tool, which inaccurately suggested that Akazawa had met with Hasina, who has been in exile since 2024. This incident marks not the first time Akazawa has faced challenges due to translation errors, raising questions about the reliability of automated language services in diplomatic communications.

As Japan and Bangladesh continue to strengthen their bilateral ties, this incident underscores the importance of clear communication in international relations. Akazawa’s remarks may prompt discussions on the need for improved translation accuracy on social media platforms, especially in contexts involving high-profile diplomatic engagements.
