Novak Djokovic Exits Shanghai Masters After First Match Defeat to Hurkacz
SHANGHAI: Novak Djokovic suffered a surprising defeat in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters, losing in straight sets to Hubert Hurkacz on Friday. The former world number one, who recently clinched the China Open title, was unable to find his rhythm against the big-serving Polish player, who won 6-4, 6-3.
Djokovic, 39, acknowledged his struggles on the court, stating, “I didn’t feel myself on the court.” He noted the quick surface in Shanghai was a stark contrast to Beijing, where he has never lost a match. The Serbian veteran’s performance faltered, particularly after a double fault that allowed Hurkacz to break serve and take a commanding lead in the second set.
This early exit raises questions about Djokovic’s form as he heads into the latter part of the season. Despite his recent success in Beijing, this defeat highlights the challenges he faces against younger opponents like Hurkacz, who is ten years his junior and demonstrated formidable serving skills, including 13 aces during the match.
Looking ahead, Hurkacz will advance to the third round, where he is set to face either Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti or Chinese wildcard Zhou Yi. Djokovic, on the other hand, will need to regroup as he prepares for upcoming tournaments, aiming to regain his competitive edge.
