Arthur Gea Upsets Ben Shelton at Shanghai Masters; Zverev Advances
SHANGHAI: In a stunning upset at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, France’s world number 56 Arthur Gea defeated US Open finalist Ben Shelton, marking the biggest upset of the tournament thus far. Gea triumphed with a score of 7-6(7/5), 7-6(7/3), eliminating the fourth-ranked American from the competition.
Following the match, Shelton expressed his disappointment, stating, “I got outplayed today. My body wasn’t ready,” referring to his recent participation in the Davis Cup and the toll of jet lag after skipping the Japan Open due to fitness concerns.
Gea’s victory is a significant milestone in his career, as it represents his first win over a top-10 player. The 21-year-old has gained confidence on the court after a breakout year, which included winning his first ATP title in Los Cabos in July. He will face 13th seed Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic in the next round.
Meanwhile, top seed Alexander Zverev continues his pursuit of the number one ranking, having advanced to the last 16 after a hard-fought three-set match against Quentin Halys. As the tournament progresses, Zverev’s performance will be closely watched as he aims to solidify his position at the top of the rankings.
