FPCCI Opposes Rs268 Billion Power Tariff Burden on Consumers

ISLAMABAD: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has formally opposed the proposed Rs268 billion burden on consumers, sought by former Wapda distribution companies (Discos) through prior-year adjustments in power tariffs.

In a detailed representation, the FPCCI, which represents a broad spectrum of businesses including manufacturing sectors, urged the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to reject what it termed as ‘inflated claims’ that had previously been disallowed or disputed by third parties. This opposition comes in response to tariff petitions filed by ten Discos, which are seeking adjustments to the indexation of multiyear tariffs for the calendar year 2027, alongside other consumer-end tariff adjustments.

The Discos collectively claim a staggering Rs2.64 trillion in revenue requirements for CY2027, citing distribution and supply costs. The FPCCI’s stance highlights concerns over the financial impact on consumers and the broader economy, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in tariff adjustments.

Looking ahead, the FPCCI has called for detailed written responses from Nepra and insists on participation in public hearings regarding these tariff adjustments. The outcome of this situation could significantly affect consumer electricity bills and the overall economic landscape in Pakistan.
