Quarterly Auto Sales Surge Despite September Decline in Pakistan

KARACHI: Despite a notable 12% year-on-year and 3% month-on-month decline in auto sales, the overall quarterly sales in Pakistan have risen by 19% in the first quarter of FY27, totaling 50,480 units. This increase comes in the face of a sluggish September, where sales of cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans dropped to 15,104 units.

Sania Irfan from Topline Securities attributed the decline in September sales to the lack of clarity regarding the HEV/PHEV sales tax policy, which has hindered companies’ invoicing processes. In contrast, Indus Motor Company (IMC) emerged as a standout performer, recording a 31% year-on-year and 3% month-on-month increase in sales to 4,142 units, driven primarily by strong demand for its Corolla, Yaris, and Cross models.

The broader implications of these sales figures highlight a mixed outlook for the automotive sector in Pakistan. While IMC’s growth signals robust consumer demand for certain models, the overall decline in sales raises concerns about market stability and the impact of policy uncertainties on consumer confidence. Honda Atlas Cars Limited (HACL) reported an 8% year-on-year and 19% month-on-month drop in sales, indicating challenges faced by other manufacturers in the current economic climate.

Looking ahead, stakeholders in the automotive industry are keenly awaiting clearer guidelines on the HEV/PHEV sales tax policy, which could significantly influence future sales trends. The upcoming months will be crucial for manufacturers as they navigate these challenges and seek to regain momentum in a competitive market.
